Adaptive Activities

The Dorney Lake site is designed for disabled user-friendliness. Adaptive events were held here for the first time at the highly acclaimed successful 2006 World Rowing Championships.

Adaptive Rowing was included for the first time as a Paralympic sport at the Beijing Games in 2008. In the London 2012 Paralympic Games being held at Dorney (more info), there are three days of racing from the 1st September to the 3rd September.

Facts about adaptive rowing:

Single sculling boats are equipped with buoyancy devices called pontoons, which act as stabilisers attached to the boats' riggers, providing additional lateral balance.

Adaptive rowing boats are equipped with special seats, which vary according to the disability of the athlete.
